process & approach

The place in which we call home is the most significant of human environments; all basic psychological needs are met here throughout the continuum of life and all its stages, seasons and stories. Consciously aware or not- design effects our mood, sense of well being, and our desire to want to stay or leave. As a seller, a well designed space can influence not only the sale of a home but also its price point and timeline. As an owner, the ability to control this environment to satisfy personal needs is not a luxury but in fact critical to our emotional well-being. With each space and client we develop a unique ‘psychological blueprint’ to highlight features and details that people can understand, appreciate and desire. Our psychological design model allows us to style in such a way that resonates with desired emotions and cultivates positive psychological associations.

Meet Julie

Founder, owner, lead designer. Certified professional home stager, Expert Psychological Stager®, Psychological Color Expert™. Serial sale shopper. Expert chaos coordinator. Captain of the tight ship.

I have an educational background in psychology and published recognition for my contributions in healthcare administration. During my time in healthcare I was involved in remodeling patient care and employee office spaces. Inspired by my studies in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, I sought to intentionally create spaces that optimized work-space performance and patient care experience- including administrative areas, waiting rooms, nurses’ stations, physician offices, family meeting and exam rooms.

My true passion for home staging and design came from preparing and staging my own home in the process of purchasing a fixer-upper. I enjoyed applying the art of decorating with the science and marketing techniques of consumer behavior. Our home was on the market less than 48 hours before receiving an offer $50,000 over asking price! I knew staging would make a difference, but I had no idea the impact could be so significant!

Throughout the renovation of my fixer-upper, I found great satisfaction in transforming the old to new and fulfilling its potential. More deeply, I was inspired by how the simple act of personalization can facilitate environmental attachments, contribute to a sense of self-definition and the impact this has on our wellbeing.

I have found that psychology is an often overlooked component in the creation and modification of spaces. Furthermore, it is not a standard consideration among current interior home staging and design service offerings. In fact, I couldn’t find ANY stagers or designers in the greater Richmond area focusing on underlying psychological needs as much as superficial and specific design trends and preferences. I’m proud to say I am now the first, and currently only certified Expert Psychological Stager® in Richmond, an accredited designation provided by none other than The Decorologist® herself.

The interior of a home represents the interior of a person. Our home becomes an external picture of the self; something that we can look at and touch in order to define who we are. Often the difficulty people have in making design decisions is caused by uncertainty about self-definition. With the right approach, designers can play an important role in the lives of their clients by helping them to clarify the self and objectify it through design. Not as clinical psychologist, but by applying a specific focus on illustrating the beauty that can be created by designing the home as an expression of our individuality.

I have seen and experienced first hand the impact psychological design can have, and started this business as a way to share that with others.

I enjoy working with busy professionals and families to create functional spaces that make life a little easier and downtime more rejuvenating. Having an exceptional ability to read and relate to people, I can quickly identify my clients’ most dominant needs and turn them into achievable design goals that meet both time and budget.

The opportunity to work with you would be my honor.
